Dear macgifts,

here is the latest demo version of MacDOS. I sent 1.0.0 towards the end of
September 1993 and this is 1.0.1 .

A brief description of MacDOS:
  MacDOS provides a Command Line Interface to the Mac OS. It supports
  wildcards, file filtering, and batches; operates on files and folders;
  launches and kills applications. Beside 36 DOS-like commands (DIR, REN,
  XCOPY, ...), MacDOS supports 18 additional commands for logging,
  text-file I/O, error handling, and string editing. Registration entitles
  you to a 180-page User's Guide (in binary form as a series of MS-Word
  documents), access to full functionality, and support via E-mail.

The differences between 1.0.1 and 1.0.0 are:

  *  With 1.0.1, the user can quit other applications.
  *  1.0.1 automatically launches an application when the user specifies
     a document (1.0.0 needed the name of the application itself).
  *  The 1.0.1 package has a couple of new examples of batches and updated
     ReadMe files.
  *  I have included licensing information in the package, so that
     potential users do not need to contact me in order to know the price
     of MacDOS and how to order it.

Although the updates are not substantial, I would really like to get rid
of the older version, because people who buy a licence, after downloading
to their Macs 200k of demo, also have to download almost as much for the
upgrade to 1.0.1 .

Also, MacDOS has been in circulation for some months, has been reviewed
by Australian Macintosh magazines, and has proven to be very solid
(actually, nobody has found a bug yet! :-)). Therefore, we will not issue
new releases for several months.

This extension enhances the functionality of your Macintosh
Quadra 840AV, Macintosh Quadra 660AV, or Macintosh Centris
660AV.  Specifically, the extension corrects certain reported
problems.  These include (a) difficulties when printing with
the LaserWriter Select 310 printer; (b) a possible system
error when both the serial port and an AppleTalk( network
connection are being used heavily; and (c) a possible system
crash when simultaneously receiving a fax and transferring
files over a network.

This extension is tested and sanctioned by Apple Computer,
Inc., who provide this software without charge to all affected
Apple customers. This software is provided on an AS-IS basis
and may be redistributed without charge, so long as said
redistribution is not for profit and contains this entire
update package: AV Serial Enhancement (system extension) and AV
Serial Enhancement Read Me (this file).

I am the author of a guide called "Here's How to MacPGP!" which I post
to the Usenet group alt.security.pgp periodically. I include in it this
utility, BinHex encoded, which PGP users need in order to cut text files
to <80 characters per line in order that a PGP signature will remain valid
upon uploading a signed text file. There is no other easy way to cut a text
file to <80 characters on a Mac! It was written by Robert Gibson and is
shareware. You simply drag a text file onto the icon of TextBreak and it's
done. I assume you need System 7 for the drag-and-drop feature but it also
functions without this feature.

I would like to take this out of my Guide, but so far this utility has only
been available on Compuserve. It is called DropTextBreak and I it is
Compacted and BinHexed.

This archive contains resource files and the source for a standalone code
resource that conforms to a Window Definition (WDEF), as defined by Apple
Computer in Inside Macintosh.

It provides a 'windoid' appearance. A windoid is a floating window that
appears above document windows in an application and is commonly used for
things such as tool palettes, information windows, and the like.

FEATURES:
-  Supports System 7-style coloring of windows.
-  In System 7, the tinge color set by the user in the Color control panel
is used.
-  Supports a zoom box and/or grow box.
-  Title bar can appear along the left of the window as well as across the
top.
-  For MacApp & THINK Windoid users, the behavior of the Windoid WDEF can
be switched to conform directly to one of those WDEFs.
-  System 6 coloring scheme (which can be set in Kolor or a similar control
panel) is also supported.
-  A DeviceLoop is used so the Windoid will be drawn correctly even when it
crosses monitors of differing depths.
-  In System 7, indexed color tables are checked to see if there are enough
different colors to display the color version (like the system WDEF).
-  Optionally allows a title in the titlebar.
-  Full source code included (compatible with MPW C and THINK C)
-  No usage fees

Subject: [*] MacCurveFit 1.0.5

Here is MacCurveFit 1.0.5 which corrects a few bugs in earlier versions. Please
replace /sci/mac-curve-fit-103.hqx with this file.

MacCurveFit is a scientific least squares curve fitting program. Data sets can
be entered into a spreadsheet window or imported from programs like Excel or
extracted from text files. Arbitrary equations may then be fitted to the data
and displayed graphically. The equations can be defined by typing them as text
and so the program is very flexible. There is also a choice of mathematical
algorithms that can be used for curve fitting.

The program is shareware and costs AUD$ 30 (AUD$ 20 for students). (The
Australian Dollar is ca US$0.67).

Announcing the release of an Australian On-Line Macintosh magazine.

"MIKinations" is an Australian-produced on-line magazine dedicated to
covering alternate viewpoints for the Macintosh enthusiast.

Its articles range from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the prosaic
to the ironic.  Put less pompously, there are serious bits and funny
bits.

MIKinations is published in a completely paperless format, and requires
a Macintosh to read.

The on-line format of the magazine is intended to mirror the normal
layout expected in a traditional journal style publication.  Layout is
very clear and easy to read.  Each page contains two columns, with page
numbering and page headers.  No scrolling is required.  Some articles
contain illustrations.

For most purposes, the on-line magazine can be thought of as a normal
magazine that is on the screen. A pointer button is used to turn a page,
instead of your fingers (!)

Most articles are of universal application and there is not much content
that is specific to Australian Mac users.  What there is of local content
might be of interest to those overseas readers who are used to 99% of
magazine content being wholly US derived. It shows that the Macintosh
flame is kept alive in places as remote and unsophisticated ;-) as down-
under here in Australia.

This first issue is of particular interest to anyone who believes the
Newton can be a great thing to poke fun at.  (A feature article for this
issue is "Ten uses for a Newton when you realise it recognises your
handwriting about as well as a dyslexic chemist.")

Or the magazine could be of interest to those who think recent releases
of software that consume several SIMMs just to load could perhaps be
just a little less memory-demanding and a bit more user-friendly.

There are also articles for those... who believe their Mac sometimes gets
too big for its boots... who are often annoyed by games that have manual-
lookup copy protection systems...  for those interested in the past &
present of Macintosh models... and for those who would like to read an
interview with the local programmer of SpeedyFinder7, Victor Tan.

All these subjects are covered by entertaining articles in the January

a Mac Plus).  It works under system 6 or 7 (and possibly earlier systems, but
that claim is untested).  It works on systems with multiple monitors (unlike
Speedy Mouse).  It allows precision cursor movement (unlike Speedy Mouse).  It
takes less than 4K on disk and less than 1K in memory.  Please report any bugs

I am the author of this FreeWare system extension,
which I call "sAVe the Disk".

This file contains version 1.3.1 of sAVe the Disk which
supersedes the previous version 1.2.1.

sAVe the Disk 1.3.1 fixes three deficiencies of the AV Macs:
It speeds up certain Resource Manager operations, improves
performance of the disk cache built into the system and
prevents extra disk activity before and after sounds are
played.

sAVe the Disk works on Centris/Quadra 660av and Quadra 840av.
It requires System 7.1 and version 1.0 or 1.1 of the System
Enabler 088.

Although sAVe the Disk has not caused me any trouble I'm not
responsible for any (unlikely) problems you may experience.

This updated version is smaller, much faster and more reliable
than previous releases. It adds a fix for the less than perfect
behaviour of the disk cache built into the system (AV Macs only)
and includes modified icons.

Thanks to Steve Kien for his suggestions and Kurt Wiley for the
system extension icons.

 Tex-Edit 2.0, by Tom Bender, is a multi-window, styled text editor that
includes a built-in text reader. Keep a copy in your Apple menu and an
alias on the desktop (for drag-and-drop operations). Tex-Edit is fast,
easy-to-use and requires very little memory. It is particularly adept at
formatting text which is transmitted to and from a BBS.

Tex-Edit requires a Mac running System 6.0.7 or better.  To use the speech
facility, you need to copy Apple's Speech Manager extension (along with any
desired voices) into the Extensions folder and re-boot. Tex-Edit runs fine
without the Speech Manager.

Tex-Edit is 32 bit clean, stationery aware, Apple event aware, System 7
compatible, MultiFinder compatible, color compatible, big screen
compatible, 68040 cache compatible and adheres to all of Apple's interface
guidelines.  Undo is implemented for most functions and balloon help is
available (under System 7).

Subject: 660AV (and 840AV?) Framegrabber woes

Our 660 AV just arrived. Fine machine, but it does some annoying things when
grabbing images from our Sony CCD-camera (Model XC-77CE). The histograms (as
measured by  Adobe Photoshop 2.5.1) never report gray-values below 16 and above
235, no matter how black or white the image may be. (This is also true when we
tried a different camera, different manufacturer, so the problem is not with
the
camera.) Far worse, the range from 228 to 234 never gets any counts either! The
problem is not in the camera hardware: short circuiting the Video-In connector
puts all counts in gray-value bin 16 and a saturated white obviously deserves
better than the measured gray-value 235. As far as we know Apple doesn't
publish
specs on the properties of the framegrabber, but we are interested if other
660AV (or 840AV) users have seen the same effects. We have looked inside the
box
for offset and gain controls for the A/D converter but weren't able to locate
them. But even if we overlooked them, it's not likely that their adjustment
would cure the 228-234 problem.

Less serious, but disturbing too, is the size that the grabbed images occupy in
RAM and on disk. Using Apple-supplied software (Videomonitor 1.0) accompanied
by
AV Digitizer Options 1.0b1 and AV Cache Tuner 1.0.1, copying an uncompressed
752*576 pixel grayscale image (= 433152 bytes) creates a 1.6 MB clipboardfile
on
disk! This amount is independent of the setting of the color/grayscale option,
so it appears that Apple once again played one of it's memory-greedy
tricks.Further, Videomonitor (the Apple program) will not grab a full image
(752*576) unless it is allocated 10 MBytes for the program!!!

I would welcome all comments by Internetters (hopefully including those
at Apple HQ!) on the reported phenomena. If they are of general interest
I will post them to Info-Mac. TIA.

Dear Net,

I have a new Quadra 840av and I have a couple of questions:

1.  I am using the geoport analog adapter and the bundled fax software.  Is
there an option to have the fax and phone share the same line?  I would
like the fax to answer only if a fax is coming in otherwise the phone would
ring.

2. Is there a 14,400 fax/modem upgrade planned?  Will it be software or
hardware?

3.  The speech recognition software was not able to start up and run when a
fax was being sent and did not start up after it was finished.  Has anyone
been able to get the fax software and the speech recognition software to
work together?

4.  We are using Knowlege server to do Medline searches.  The av's crash
when the software is launched.  Does anyone know the email address for
Aries software?

According to a rather large discussion on a dutch BBS somewhat more systems
might work with the Auto Power On/Off cp. It seems to be a combination of
soft power on built in, and system 7.1. My Quadra 900 also works with it. I
also heard a rumor ( it couldn't be verified ) that the larger desktop macs
that don't have soft power on ( not the 605/475, but the 610/650, etc ) can
be expanded with a simple electronic relay. In the internal power supply
this part is just missing. As I haven't seen such a machine inside I can't
defend/attack this rumor.

Subject: Disable 'connnect network dialog box' [Q]

Hello Netters !

Whenever I enable and disable Appletalk using the chooser, I always get the
dialog box that says something like: 'make sure you are connected to an
appletalk network'. As I think this is a kind of IBM message ( like 'if you
can read this, you figured out how to turn on the computer { Does anyone
know how to turn on a computer ? -:) }).

My opinion is that this dialog box should only appear when balloon help is
enabled, and then only once in a while.

Any suggestions ( Victor T. ? ) ?

Subject: Ethernet connectors for PowerBook 180?

I am looking for an ethernet connector for a PB180. There are a range
available and I am looking for the following in the adaptor I finally
purchase:

1) connectors for thin, thick, and 10BaseT cabling
2) small as possible!
3) dual voltage power supply (if possible)
4) compatibility with hardware and software (System 7 and future OS)
5) reliability

The products I have found so far that seem to fit the bill include:
DaynaPort SCSI/Link-3
Asante EN/SC PB

I have also come across an adaptor that fits into the serial port
(DaynaPort E/Z), is there any advantag/disadvantage of this type of adaptor
over a SCSI adaptor.

Does anyone have any experience of these or other adaptors? I look forward
to any comments.

Subject: F1 Demo problems (A)

If you downloaded the F1 v1.1 demo, or the updater, you need to be aware of
the following bugs:

* F1 will crash if you try to launch it without using F1 setup to set the
  Serial Port first.  Use the pop-up menu that presents different serial
  ports to choose a different port if your machine hangs.

* An ";" must be added to the end of F1's dial string. This instructs F1 to
  not add a carriage return -- so your string will look like "ATDT;"

* F1 1.1 crashes during a call hangup sometimes.

* The old version of F1 (v1.03) ignored the "BBS" event created in Tabby --
  it simply didn't care when the crashcall arrived, it just performed it's
  task. Now, with the new F1 v1.1, the event specified as "BBS" is read from
  0000 to 2400 and F1 will sit there and regard that time designation as a
  full Event. You will have to change the BBS setting.

* The 'Check Port' and 'Show CTB Windows' buttons are exchanged
  (and not only this):
- Port is checked if the 'Show CTB Windows' is selected
- CTB Tools windows are displayed if the 'Check Port' button IS NOT checked.

There is a bug in the button selection code: you should see only ONE CFG009
line in the Formula1 Prefs file. You can view it from the F1 setup
application and you can edit it as you would any text file.

You can correct the file manually this way:

CFG009<tab>8        means 'get port info'
CFG009<tab>16       means 'get baud info'
CFG009<tab>24       means 'get baud AND port info'


* Some people are using F1 v1.1 to make outgoing calls only, while using
  v1.0.3 to handle incoming ones. There's no longer a conflict using several
  F1 versions - just rename each version and open up #STR resource 134 and
  specify which filename you wish to use as the preference file instead of
  Formula1 prefs.

These bugs have been discussed in the Mac Communications FidoNet echoes. I
hope this helps anyone who downloaded the files and experienced problems.

- v1.1.1 should be released before long  :-)  In the meantime, you can get
  some idea of how the new EMSI compatible F1 works.

Subject: Finder File Size v. Real Size

I know that there's a minimum size for any file, which is dependent upon
the size of the Macintosh volume on which it resides. But I've a file here
which doesn't seem to adhere to the rules.

The file in question is a folder, containing nothing but more folders, each
with a custom icon. (It's a custom icon collection.) According to the
System 7.1 Finder's Get Info, this folder has a size of 12K (yes,
_twelve_), and contains 596 items. Yet, when I attempt to copy this
seemingly minuscule folder, the Copy command will inform me that the folder
contains 1186 items, almost double what Get Info says. And, when I first
attempted to copy this folder onto an 800K disk, I was also informed that
an additional *1.7MB* was needed to copy the items.

Why the discrepancy between Get Info and reality, and how much space does this
folder actually occupy? BTW, the partition's size is about 100MB.

Reading the flames on LaCie.. Maxtor has essentially the same policy. I have
a drive gone bad (actually the SCSI controller card on an LXT213SY was
damaged) and they will not fix it or help me in any way because they no
longer manufacture that drive. Their policy is that when they quit selling
a drive, and the warranty on existing drives expires, they no longer
service them in any way.

It sounds just like LaCie's policy.

   I use hh for hardware handshaking below.
   Long ago, I had already worked with Connect-It to get hh cable (they
had red and orange mixed up in something like printer cable that worked
for another platform's hh cable, while I had cd specs on what all should
be connected to what). While we worked it out, they sent me various
hypothetically corrected cables. I hypothesized the color pair switch and
rewired and informed them. They respect their customers.
    I am now a satisfied high speed modeming customer and they sell cheap
as far as I can see.
    e mail them on aol.rgflowers for a price. They will ship you from
Arlington, Texas.
    The electronic postmaster didn't seem to like your from address
(ARBRODY@vax.clarku.edu). Chalk it off as one of the mysteries of e mail.

I am curious about Houdini; it seems a very nice solution for
those who are working (tortured) in an IBM only environment.

A few questions...

1. When????
2. Will it only be available for the Quadra 610?
3. Dealer install only?  (seems like there might be some HD
     partitioning needed.)
4. SCSI access via DOS end (i.e. should I buy an IBM formatted drive?)
     How about Syquest disks?

There are more questions... wish I wrote 'em down when I thought of
them.

Subject: Kid Pix 1.2 (Q)

I finally bought a copy of the much-acclaimed Kid Pix 1.2 for my
two-and-a-half-year-old.  I've run into three problems, and am wondering if
anyone else has run into the same.  I'm using an SE/30 8MB runnning
System 7.0/tuneup 1.1.1,  and a Radius Color Pivot/LE.

(1) In 32-bit mode (using Mode32), selecting Samll Kids Mode freezes the
program, and requires my restarting the Mac.

(2) In Small Kids Mode, the ``bib'' that's supposed to prevent my girl
>From selecting the Desktop doesn't work on my setup because the ``bib''
covers only the Pivot/LE but not the SE/30's (internal) monitor, so
accidentally clicking on the SE/30's screen does bring up the Desktop and
provide access everything else.

(3) The manual states, ``Press the spacebar when booting Kid Pix and the
drawing screen will enlarge to take advantage of monitors larger than
13".''  Not so on my Color Pivot/LE, i.e. the drawing screen does not
fill up the Pivot/LE's screen.

Otherwise, KP is a fine program, and my little girl loves using it (even
though she's not yet able to use the trackball without any supervision).

Any comments would be much appreciated.

I believe the usual date to use is Tuesday, January 24. That is the
day, two days after SuperBowl Sunday when the 1984 ad was run, that
the Mac was demonstrated to the shareholders at the Flint Center.
This was also probably the day that Steve Jobs designated as Day One
in his Hundred Days campaign -- 100 days to ship 50,000 units and
show that the Mac would make a serious mark in the computing world.

If you want to get really tricky, you could also use Monday, January
16. That's supposedly the day the final version of the system
software (and MacWrite and MacPaint) was picked up by courier from
Apple to start mass duplication. So that's when the first fully
functioning Mac was "finished", although it was not the official
release date yet.

Love both of them. But opening something from the apple menu through
menu choice gives me an "empty mailbox" message when I'm in Eudora, and
I shortly crash. Has anyone else experienced this?- I haven't done the
Extensions Manager eliminate-one-by-one YET! ARGH! I've had a very stable
system for awhile now, until I brought in the new Eudora. Didn't have
any problem with the earlier v. of Eudora and MenuChoice.

If you do "About this Macintosh", you only get a total of the memory used
by the system. Is there some way to get more detail?? I am trying to figure
out which INITS, etc take up memory, how much, and so on. Any utils that

At Syracuse University, all students are encouraged to use Eudora for their
mail accounts.  Each students makes a personalized Eudora floppy disk so that
they can pop it into any Mac on campus.  It also allows you to take your mail

A fellow employee near me has the same problem with his Quadra 840 AV.
It seems to not be correlated to any external thing.  He thinks it has
something to do with a bad power supply.

He called Apple and they said they never heard of anything like that
happening.  Another employee here thinks that is "bull-pucky".

We have many Macintoshes here, and have not seen this problem in any
others before, for many years.  This person just got his Q840AV and
has seen the problem much more frequent than 2 times in 2 weeks.

Is this a common problem?

Subject: Word 5.1 and Endnote

Does anyone know of a way to make the 1989 bibliographic package Endnote
compatible with Word 5.1?  Endnote opens readily with Word 4.0 but not with
versions 5.0 or 5.1.  Customer Support for Endnote is not available at the
telephone number in my users manual--the vendor (Niles & Associates, of
Berkeley, Cal.) is either out of business or has changed its phone number.
Thanks for any suggestions other than the obvious one of opening Endnote in
Word 4, and then copying the bibliography into Word 5.
